Now, 7 years after that, carbon levels are on their lowest since the change of the millennium, almost 60 years ago. How did we come to this bending?

After the first commercial nuclear fusion plant powered on in Japan on February 11 2027, other countries followed their example to deliver cheap and clean electricity to the world. In 2039, India completed the hundredth nuclear fusion plant in the world and eighteen years later Brazil was the country receiving the honor for completing the thousandth one. Now, there are exactly 1854 fusion power plants on our planet with a total capacity of 28.000 gigawatt, supplying 97% of the global energy use.

Estimates are that in the next five to ten years, CO2 levels will start to decline with a slower rate, so the pre-industrial numbers of 280 ppm CO2 will probably be reached around the year 2080.

Plastics: Blessing or curse?

Take a look around in the room you're sitting in and pick out ten objects at random. Your computer or television, a marker, a chair...Pick whatever you want. Do you have ten? Ok, now take a closer look and count how many of those are made of plastic or have plastics processed in them. I did the test and counted seven! Maybe you've counted only five or perhaps nine or even all of them, the precise number doesn't really matter.

The point I'm trying to make is that lots and lots of the object we use in our daily life are made of plastic. It's hard to deny, plastics are useful. But why? The reasons are obvious. Plastics are easy and very cheap to produce, but most important of all, they're nearly indestructible. And let that be the big issue with plastics. Because of their resilience and durability, only 1 to 3 percent is recycled. The other 97 percent is burned or dumped.

In the sixties, the rise of plastics brought with it a wave of single use items. People did no longer have to buy an expensive pen or some other everyday object. You just bought ten made out of plastic for the price of one decent piece. Pen empty? Throw it in the trash can and pick another one!

Far away, somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, there's a plastic "soup" of garbage, twice the size of the continental United States. Fifteens years ago, nobody knew this! This "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" has been discovered by accident in 1997 and ever since, it hasn't stopped growing. It's weight is estimated at - hold on tight - 100 million tons! That's about 16 kilograms or 35 pounds for you, me and every other person on the planet!

Swirling underwater currents are responsible for the vast expanse of debris to be held in place. In fact, the "soup" is actually two linked areas, known as the Western and Eastern Pacific Garbage Patches. About one fifth of the junk – which includes everything from footballs to kayaks and Lego blocks to carrier bags – is thrown off ships or oil platforms. The rest comes from land.

It's disastrous. Every sea or ocean in the world is polluted with plastics. Sea turtles mistake a plastic bag for a jelly fish, swallow it...and die a painful death.

Or they get trapped it a piece of garbage and get deformed.

Here's a short movie about the damage done by plastics to sea turtles.

Seals also have their share of misery.

Albatrosses fill up their stomach with plastics, one small piece at a time, until there's no space left for real food.

Because most of the particles are very small, straining the ocean for plastic is not an option. The nets used to catch those particles would fish up tons of plankton in the process, robbing lots of sea animals of their food.

Bigger pieces often drift ashore.

Bays are often garbage accumulation places too.

It's clear plastics is no blessing at all. On the contrary! It's something we want to get rid of as soon as possible, but because of the lack of a decent - read functional ánd cheap - alternative, we're stuck in our addiction to it. There have been quite a few attempts to invent suitable alternatives, but you know our economic point of view: Rather dirty and cheap then sustainable but expensive...An example of a functional but expensive alternative is the biodegradable bottle by the Colorado company called Biota. After 80 days, the bottle if fully decomposed.

Besides its price, the biodegradable bottle has another disadvantage: It has corn processed in it. It's clear that making billions of biodegradable bottles and bags would be disastrous for food supplies in developing countries. And there's always something. With every attempt made, there's been a deal breaker...As long as there's no breakthrough we'd better try to limit our use of plastics. The damage plastics is causing in the environment is huge...

What can you do yourself?

- Stop buying plastic bottles! Buy deposit bottles and a water filter like this one to filter ordinary tap water into clean drinking water.

- Try to avoid plastic packaging. It's not easy because you don't always have a choice, but if you really pay attention, you can make a big difference here too.

- Use reusable diapers. They make a difference of 280 kilograms of garbage per baby!

What if climate change is a big hoax?

What's the worst thing that could happen if climate change turned out to be the biggest - second biggest if you count religion - hoax in human history?

The Girl Who Silenced the World

Born and raised in Vancouver, Severn Suzuki has been working on environmental issues since she was just a little girl. At age 9, she and some friends started the Environmental Children's Organization (ECO), a small group of children committed to learning and teaching other kids about environmental issues. With the money they raised themselves, they traveled 8000 kilometers or 5000 miles to 1992's UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. There, 12 year-old Severn gave this powerful speech that deeply affected and silenced some of the most prominent world leaders.

Speaking about the hole in the ozone layer, pollution, deforestation and the extinction of so many species, Severn charges that the adults have no idea how to fix these things and that they must change our ways. “If you don’t know how to fix it, stop breaking it”, she pleads.

What has changed since then? Almost nothing. Her speech is as resonant today as it was 18 years ago.

Years later, in 2002, Severn wrote a piece for Time magazine in which she said:
“I spoke for six minutes and received a standing ovation. Some of the delegates even cried. I thought that maybe I had reached some of them, that my speech might actually spur action. Now, a decade from Rio, after I’ve sat through many more conferences, I’m not sure what has been accomplished. My confidence in the people in power and in the power of an individual’s voice to reach them has been deeply shaken…In the 10 years since Rio, I have learned that addressing our leaders is not enough. As Gandhi said many years ago, ‘We must become the change we want to see.’ I know change is possible.”
Today, Severn is an environmental activist, speaker, television host and author. She has spoken around the world about environmental issues, urging listeners to define their values, act with the future in mind, and take individual responsibility.

Totally worth six minutes of your life!

Becoming a sustainable eater

Here's a guideline for becoming a sustainable eater. Below, I introduce six categories, I've called them levels, in which most of us can be grouped. It's possible to evolve from one level to another and the higher the level you're in, the more sustainable your food consumption is. You can also drop down a level, but once you're in level one, it's impossible to drop to zero. Except for people suffering from insomnia...

Level zero:
If you are in this level, you're not aware of the impact the meat industry has on the environment. Ignorance is bliss. You'd be surprised how many people fit in this category...If you belong in this level, I recommend you watch a documentary called "Meat the truth". You can watch the trailer below.

Level one:
You've read, heard or learned in one way or another that our meat industry is a pain in the ass for our planet, but you don't do anything with that knowledge. You're still a devoted carnivore and you're fine with that. If someone becomes a vegetarian because of environmental issues, good for him, but you won't join him.

Level two:
You take a real first step towards becoming a sustainable eater: You start lowering your meat consumption. Instead of eating a 300 gram steak, you are satisfied with the 100 grams of meat per day recommended by doctors. You still eat meat every day, but your meat consumption may be halfed in weight.

Level three:
You manage to renounce meat for at least one day a week. In Flanders, we have something called "Thursday veggie day", though it hasn't really settle down yet. If all 6 million inhabitants of Flanders would participate in this event, that would be the CO2-equivalent of taking 500.000 cars off the road. That's huge!

Level three and a half:
Instead of being meat-free for one day a week, there are multiple days in a week on which you don't consume meat.

Level four:
You've managed to ban all meat from your diet. You're now officially a pescetarian: someone who doesn't eat meat, but still consumes fish.

Level five:
After banning all meat, you've decided to stop eating fish and other sea products too. No tuna, salmon or shrimps for you. Overfishing is a huge underestimated problem. A great documentary about it is "The end of the line". Here's the trailer:

Level six:
To become a level six, you should try to ban as much milk and eggs from your diet as possible, but don't exaggerate. If you eat some pastries with eggs processed in them, don't make it a drama. The intention of a level six is to avoid drinking huge quantities of milk and eating lots of eggs. Our goal is not becoming a vegan, it's becoming a sustainable eater.

I don't say anything about people eating eggs or chicken meat from hens they keep in their own garden. That's not the point here. I'm talking about the huge livestock industry that is needed to provide people with their needs.

It's clear that the higher the level you get, the 'harder' it is to jump to the next one. Evolving from level two to level three is peanuts in comparison with going from level four to level five. In my opinion, everybody should get to level three, or at least level two. The more people get to level four, the better, but you can't really order someone to become a pescetarian or a vegetarian. I myself, I'm a level four, but thinking of becoming a level five.

Keep in mind that there are a lot of other aspects in sustainable eating, which I don't mention here. Even if you're a level six, you're still doing a bad job when you're eating strawberries in February.

Feel free to comment below!
<img Stewart's humor is brilliant and with most issues he scrutinizes, he hits the nail right on the head.

In this fragment, Stewart mocks both our political leaders and some retarded climate change deniers. Sean Hannity is one of them. Here's what he says:

"No I don't believe in global warming! This week was one of the coldest weeks on record, it was snowing in Houston!"
Dude...Climate and weather,

NOT

the

same

thing!

Weather describes whatever is happening outdoors in a given place at a given time. Weather is what happens from minute to minute. Climate describes the total of all weather occurring over a period of years in a given place. When talking about global warming, the two are even more different, because climate change is a global phenomenon. Even if it would snow for 2 months during summertime in Houston, you couldn't say anything about global warming, because you wouldn't know anything about the rest of the world.

Republicans, bah...! type='html'>It must've been almost two years since I first saw this amazing video. Yet it still is the single most effective way I've encountered to convince people to take action against global warming. Essentially, it's little more than a high school science teacher named Greg Craven, set up in his home with a whiteboard and a marker.

But, he's managed to tell his story to over 7 million viewers on multiple websites. And that's impressive. Particularly when you consider the fact that he's done it without the help of anything more high tech than his YouTube account.

What Craven asks us is in fact the following. When it comes to the global warming debate, do we want to win the battle, but lose the war? In other words, who cares who is “right” about the cause behind the climbing average temperatures? Do the polar bears care if we agree on who’s to blame for melting glaciers and shrinking icebergs?

Debating over whether or not humans caused global warming is pointless. Instead, Craven suggests, the risk of not acting far outweighs the risk of acting. He puts it like this:

"This is not just another environmental issue. This may eat our lunch. This is fundamentally different because in a complex system like the climate, there may be tipping points where irreversible damage is done, but you don't see it until it's too late to do something about it."

Now there's something our political leaders in Copenhagen should see. Instead of debating about futile leaked letters and other trivialities, let's get them to watch this video and give them a fresh perspective on things. Sometimes, we all need to take a giant step back from the fray and consider what is truly at risk here.

How to regrow clearcut rain forest

Many years ago, Willie Smits, speaker in the TED talk below, saved an orangutan from an almost certain death. This event made him decide to spend the following years trying to save as many orangutans as he could and take care of them, to the best of his abilities. One thing led to another and at the moment, Smits is responsible for regrowing clearcut rain forest and re-establishing the biodiversity in a part of Borneo. By doing this, he also improved the life of the local inhabitants and most important of all, he even managed to change the local climate.

The story Smits tells us is very confronting on the one hand, but very hope-giving on the other.

The thrilling potential of SixthSense technology

Here is a mind blowing glimpse into the future. Pranav Mistry, an Indian MIT student explains and demonstrates his vision for the interaction of the physical world with the digital world. Through asking simple, logical questions, exploring, experimenting, inventing and re-inventing, Pranav has opened a box full of possibilities and the best part is he wants to share it with the world.

Pranav Mistry is the inventor of SixthSense, a portable device that enables new interactions between the real world and the world of data. Now a new report from Worldwatch Institute shows that the impact of livestock and poultry is much greater than previously thought and actually amounts to approximately 51% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions!

The FAO's (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) famous 2006 report "Livestock's Long Shadow" calculated annual greenhouse gas emissions from livestock to be 11.8%. What's the reason for this huge difference? Worldwatch shows that the FAO severely undercounted or misallocated emissions from a number of areas in the livestock production chain.

Most important in these calculations is making sure emissions are attributed to the right areas. In the next few paragraphs, I'll explain how the 11.8% (7,516 millioin tons of CO2) calculated by the FAO, eventually became 51% (32,564 million tons).

Livestock Respiration = +13.7% (8,769 million tons)
In 2006, the FAO considered respiration by livestock not to be a net source of CO2. Their line of thought was: Anything emitted by animals is naturally offset by other natural processes, so that livestock can actually be considered a carbon sink. Worldwatch report authors Robert Goodland and Jeff Anhang believe this to be flawed logic.

Goodland and Anhang say: "The amount of carbon stored in livestock is negligible compared to the amount stored in forests, cleared to create space for growing feed and grazing livestock."

They go on by saying that in one crucial way livestock is to be looked at in the same way we look at our cars. Both are essentially human inventions, for our "comfort", but not survival. We measure the direct emissions of the latter, but not the former. By keeping Greenhouse gases (GHG) attributable to livestock respiration off GHG balance sheets, it is predictable that they will not be managed and their amount will increase - as is in fact happening.

Overlooked Land Use = +4.2% (2,672 million tons)
It's common knowledge that land is being converted from tropical forest (a huge carbon sink) to cattle grazing or agricultural lands (a comparatively tiny carbon sink) in many parts of the world. This is indeed accounted for in the FAO analysis, but Worldwatch argues that the foregone carbon sequestration by using 26% of land worldwide for cattle grazing and 33% of arable land for growing food for livestock also need to be considered.

The impact of letting this land regrow as forest, or even be used for growing food for humans or sustainably-produced biofuels, is such that a bit over 4% of global greenhouse emissions ought to be added in this column.

Methane = +7.9% (5,047 million tons)
Of all human-caused methane emissions, 37% comes from livestock. That number isn't in debate. However, according to Goodland and Anhang, the global warming potential of methane used by the FAO is way too low.

Because of the fact that methane has greater warming potential than CO2, a 20-year time frame for calculating the impact is much more appropriate than the commonly used 100-year time frame. This is supported by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).

Using this methodology, rather than methane emissions from livestock totaling 3.7% of the global amount, they would be 11.6%, an increase of 7.9%.

Other Uncounted & Misallocated Sources = +13.4% (8400 million tons)
Finally, there are 3 sources which the Worldwatch analysis says are uncounted and misallocated by the FAO.

4% from the fact that the FAO report used slightly older stats for the amount of livestock products produced. From 2002 to 2009 the tonnage of livestock products increased 12%.

4.7% from undercounting of the amount of livestock in the world, their emissions, and overgeneralization of production efficiency. The report authors contend that while the FAO cites much data from conditions in Minnesota, its wrong to extrapolate these out to the rest of the world, because these conditions are more efficient than are generally found in other parts of the world.

4.7% from aspects of the livestock production chain, and byproducts of it such as the leather and fur industries, which wouldn't otherwise exist. Also included in this percentage is treatment of illnesses related to meat-intensive diets and zoonotic diseases as the swine flu.

The Solution = Widespread Adoption of Vegetarian Diets
The overall message of following pages of the original report can be boiled down to this: One of the cheapest and most effective ways of mitigating climate change is eating far less meat and dairy or, better yet, eating none at all and adopting a full vegetarian or vegan diet. It's going to take a massive cultural shift to do this, but the effect is huge.

Some statistics to support this conclusion: A Dutch report, which came out about 8 months ago, showed that if enough people adopted a vegetarian diet we could reduce the costs of mitigating climate change by up to 70%. Even if people returned to eating meat at levels normal for our grandparents, those costs could be reduced by 50%.

Here's the original article by by Robert Goodland and Jeff Anhang.

Face-Off with a deadly predator

OK, this video has been on the internet for quite a few days now, but it’s a story worth seeing. It also makes you wish you could experience even a fraction of this yourself, camera in hand.

The part I like the most is where Nicklen said the leopard seal eventually became aware of the fact that he was a “useless predator in her ocean, probably going to starve to death.” Realizing that, it started looking a bit concerned, so it brought back weak penguins and some dead penguins.

The key is individual responsibility

You go into a community and they will vote 80 percent to 20 percent in favor of a tougher Clean Air Act, but if you ask them to devote 20 minutes a year to having their car emissions inspected, they will vote 80 to 20 against it. We are a long way in this country from taking individual responsibility for the environmental problem. - William D. Ruckelshaus, former EPA administrator, New York Times

In this quote, Ruckelshaus only talks about America, but I'm pretty sure that you can say this about almost all developed countries. As long as we don't really have to change our habits or need to do an effort ourselves, all is just fine. It takes a hell of a lot of time to type, so why on earth did I pick that one?

Well, first of all, it’s a sticky name. When you stumble upon my blog and the first thing you see, written in big on top of the page is “How to save the human race”, that’s something you remember. A day or maybe even a week later, you’ll still remember that name and you may even visit me back, even if you didn’t especially like the content I wrote. You may encounter some blogs – or sites – that tell about the same subjects I do, www.renewableenergy.com for example, but you won’t even pay notice to its name or you’ll forget about it sooner than you’ll forget about mine. It’s a brilliant marketing strategy Toomas taught me. “What the fuck do we have to do to save the human race” may be even more effective, but I don’t want to take things too far – although that’s another golden rule to become a hit on the internet: be extremist in everything you write and do.

Next, why did I choose “how to save the human race” instead of “how to save our planet” or “how to save the earth” or something similar to that. Think about it, that’s what you’re hearing all of the time. Everybody is shouting “Save our planet!” or “Stop destroying mother earth!”. But is that really their main objective? Won’t the planet save itself? Isn’t it ourselves we are trying to save? Off course we have to treat our planet, our environment and the animals in it with respect and great care, but that’s not our number one goal as a species. We are trying to stay alive. Global warming? No problem for our earth, it has survived plenty of them before. Unless a giant object bumps into our planet, or another big cosmic event takes place, our planet will take care of itself just fine. It’s species that disappear instead. Species like the dinosaurs, the mammoth and the sable tooth. Species like us! Whether you like it or not, for mother nature we are nothing more than any of those. We may be civilized – or not? – and we may have morals and stuff like that, but in the end, we just are living beings, subjected to the laws of nature. 99% of the species that ever lived went extinct, it’s a common thing in nature. I’m not a pessimist, I’m a relativist and a realist. That’s why I chose “How to save the human race” as name for my blog. Global warming may be harmless to our planet, but it can turn out to be a biggie for us.

Attention!

Digging any deeper into my blog archive will only take you to posts used for the setup of my blog. Belgium, home of chocolate, good beer, French fries – long story... – and Manneken Pis. My native tongue is Dutch, so now and then, you may read some grammatically weird stuff on this blog.

I’ve chosen to write this blog in English because it’s my goal to reach as many people as possible. People from all over the world.
During the weekends I live in Waregem and on weekdays my home town is Leuven, a city with one of the oldest catholic universities of the world.

Born in 1989, I now am 21 years old.

Describe my interests and hobbies in a word cloud and you get something like this.
